    : A ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a Landing Station for a $US33 million submarine fiber-optic cable telecommunications network for Tonga, was led by the Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano at Sopu, on the Nuku'alofa waterfront on January 24. The US$33million project, jointly funded, 80% by the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, and 20% by the Tonga Communications Corporation, is expected to be in operation by the second quarter of 2013.

    : The Ministry of Education will launch its new language policy for all Tongan schools at the beginning of the 2012 school year in February. Dr 'Ana Taufe'ulungaki, the Minister of Education, said that under the new policy Tongan will be the only language to be used in all kindergarten schools, and in primary schools from Classes 1-3. An exception will be for children whose mother tongue is not Tongan. The English language will be introduced into the schools in Class 4 as a subject.

    : Tropical Cyclone Cyril, category 1 centre [987hpa] was located about 15 miles southwest of Vava'u or about 150 miles north-northeast of Nuku'alofa at 6:00 am this morning, 7 February 2012. Cyril is moving east-southeast at 18 knots, a Special Weather Bulletin from the RSMC - Nadi Tropical Cyclone Centre warns.

    : A tropical cyclone alert remains in force for Ha'apai, Vava'u and Tongatapu group. A strong wind warning remains in force for all Tonga land areas and coastal waters. Tropical depression 11f located near Lifuka, west of Tonga, is moving towards the east-southeast at 12 knots or about 22 km/hours. The depression may develop into a tropical cyclone within the next 12 or 24 hours, Tonga's Meteorological Service warned in its Special Weather Bulletin at 6:20am today.

    : On the eve of World Cancer Day the World Health Organization (WHO) urged governments to strengthen national control programmes, including by raising awareness, amid an alarming rise of cancer cases. WHO's Western Pacific Region bears a significant share of the global cancer burden, accounting for 32% of all cancers in 2008. There were slightly more than 4 million new cases of cancer in the region in 2008 – 2.31 million in men and 1.75 million in women. Nearly 2.6 million people in the region died from cancer in that year. - WHO.
