The capital, Nuku'alofa, enjoyed patches of sunshine this morning, with fresh east to southeast winds. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tropical Cyclone Neil (Cat.1) is expected to pass directly over Tonga tonight, bringing heavy rain and wind gusts up to 55 knots (101km/hr) in Ha'apai and Tongatapu. The Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre at 8:00pm tonight, Saturday February 9, stated that a heavy rain warning and flash flood advisory is now in force for all of Tonga. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Two Tongan Navy patrol boats were moved out from Masefield Naval Base at Touliki to anchor in deeper water offshore this morning, as a low pressure system brought strong winds and gales into Tongatapu. Strong winds and heavy rain are expected to continue throughout the day and more rough weather is forecast for the weekend. Tonga Met maintained a storm warning in its 1:00pm advisory. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Serious concerns over public comments, interference and threats regarding the death of a US-Tongan Sione Feimoefiafi on 4 February in Nuku‘alofa, were expressed today by the Attorney General’s Office who urged the public to exercise restraint - or face criminal prosecutions. “The rule of law still prevails in Tonga,” the Attorney General stated. Fua'amotu, Tonga : A Tropical Cyclone Alert for the Niuas was issued by the Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Warnings Centre at 2:00pm this afternoon as an active tropical disturbance moves south towards Fiji and Tongan waters. Gales are forecast for the Niuas tonight; with strong wind warnings for Vava'u, Ha'apai, Tongatapu and 'Eua land areas and coastal waters. -

Suva, Fiji : UNICEF warned today of the dangers posed by online violence, cyberbullying and digital harassment for the 70.6per cent of young people aged 15 to 24 years old who are online globally, and called for concerted action to tackle and prevent violence against children and young people online. In the Pacific islands, a Tonga government survey in 2017 showed that 42 per cent of adolescents and youth experienced cruelty and mean behaviour online, with 59 per cent of those being females.
