Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The polls have closed at 4:00pm in today's By-election for the Vava'u Constituency no. 14 held in Tongatapu and Vava'u, to fill the seat vacated by Dr. Saia Piukala. There are four candidates. The Electoral Commissioner and Supervisor of Elections, Pita Vuki said the results will be released at the end of the counting, whenever that might be.Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Christopher Taufa (38) was jailed for causing grievous bodily harm when he used a branch or a piece of timber to attack his neighbour during a drink-up in 2022. The attack was extreme. Justice Cooper sentenced him to 30-months' imprisonment, with the last six months suspended on conditions on 26 March, at the Supreme Court in Nuku’alofa.Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The unmanaged drugs issue in Tonga is becoming “a new normal”, says Tonga's Head Psychiatrist, Dr. Mapa Puloka, who is seeing illicit drug-related disorders making up 40% of monthly admissions to the psychiatric ward. With mental health impacts skyrocketing, there is no one available to pick up the pieces. From the frontline, both Mapa and the Salvation Army counselor Mele Prescott are lonely voices urging government to establish a drugs rehabilitation center in Tonga, as they see families and communities being broken by the mental health impacts of illicit drugs use. Honiara, Solomon Islands : The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) today, 21 March, launched a major upgrade and development to their monitoring and surveillance efforts, with two new systems built for vessel registrations and Port State Measures. The e-PSM system is a critical tool in the fight against Ilegal Unreported and Unregulated fishing (IUU) in the Western and Central Pacific.
