    : Tonga is ranked at no. 44 out of 107 countries this year, listed on the Henley Passport Index, which ranks all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The ranking is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Asian countries are now world leaders when it comes to both global economic activity and global mobility, with Japan and Singapore holding the top spot ranked at no.1, while the Pacific Islands states are ranked between 39-62.

    : Two international organisations, UN-OHRLLS and IRENA, will collaborate on activities to support the building of renewables-based energy systems, in order to close the energy access gaps experienced by least developed countries and small island states. UN-OHRLLS Under-Secretary-General Fekitamoeloa Katoa ‘Utoikamanu and IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera signed an MOU on 27 September in New York.

And, at a time of high tensions with US President Donald Trump’s administration, it will be imbued with an extra dose of patriotic enthusiasm.     : Geoengineering will save us from the climate crisis, its champions insist. By using technology either to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or to deflect some solar radiation away from the Earth, they claim, we can undo the damage wrought by humanity’s failure to reduce greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions. But while it certainly sounds like a convenient solution, there is no proof that it will work – and no telling what the side effects could be. As a result, Australia’s NRL announced they would withdraw an invitation for a TNRL team to play in the World Cup 9s to be held in October.

    : Tonga National Rugby League (TNRL) says it “knows of no rule that requires Israel Folau or any other player registered with the TNRL, to apply to the RLIF to be eligible to play for Tonga” in a statement released on 24 September. However, the RLIF board will meet today to discuss the issue.
