    : Tonga’s first Labour Mobility Policy was launched by Prime Minister Hon Dr Tu’i’onetoa today, 4 February. Thousands of Tongans are employed in labour mobility schemes in New Zealand and Australia in horticulture, meat processing, construction, tourism and hospitality. The policy, which was endorsed by cabinet in 2020, aims to maximize the development impact of circular labour mobility in Tonga.

    : New York Times reporting: While more than 90 million people worldwide have been vaccinated, only 25 in all of sub-Saharan Africa, a region of about 1 billion people, have been given doses outside of drug trials, according to the World Health Organization. But as new variants like the one discovered in South Africa migrate to more countries — including the United States — it is becoming ever clearer that the tragedy for poorer countries could become a tragedy for every country. The more the virus spreads and the longer it takes to vaccinate people, the greater chance it has to continue to mutate in ways that put the whole world at risk.

    : Lolina ‘Ofa (24) was sentenced to 15-months imprisonment for numerous counts of forgery and theft of $18,189 pa’anga from a family business. The sentence was fully suspended, at the Nuku'alofa Surpeme Court. "I believe the defendant had mistakenly believed that this idea of taking whatever you want from your fa'etangata would be applicable in her case, but unfortunately the complainant did not share her logic," said the judge.

    : The best countries on the 2020 Corruption Perception Index are New Zealand and Denmark with scores of 88. However, two thirds of countries scored below 50/100 and public sector corruption was deadlier than ever during the pandemic. “The results make one thing clear – corruption kills people,” stated Transparency International this week in releasing their report.

    : Tropical Cyclone Ana has weakened into a Category 1 storm as it moves into southern Tongan waters today. The Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, at 5pm Monday, said a gale warning remains in force. On its current track, it could bring destructive storm force winds to Tele-ki-Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau and damaging gale force winds over Ha'apai, Tongatapu and 'Eua, early Tuesday morning.

    : Tonga's National Reserve Bank is moving to enforce the Moneylenders Act by registering all businesses who are conducting lending services in Tonga. The deadline for registration closed on Friday, January 29 and the NRBT said moneylenders who had not registered in time may face legal action.

    : Tonga is finalizing its National Deployment and Vaccination Plans to access CoViD-19 vaccines from the COVAX Facility, and initial quantities are expected to be announced soon. Health CEO, Dr Siale ‘Akau’ola said COVAX is assessing the readiness of participant countries, who will have to make a contribution if they want vaccination coverage of their population to be increased.
