Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Bank of South Pacific Tonga Limited today announced a Net Profit After Tax of T$11.85 million for the financial year ending 31 December 2021. The result was driven by the release of Covid-19 provisions, good foreign exchange revenue, and strong transaction volumes. BSP Tonga Country Head, Mrs Marcellina Wolfgramm-Haapai said this result was 20% above the 2020 financial result. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Table Tennis is providing a powerful distraction for the youth among the most affected by the volcanic eruptions and tsunamis, which devastated homes on the islands of Mango and ‘Atata. The trauma of their recent experiences will no doubt remain with the displaced communities for a long time to come – but, in the meantime, the smiles of joy on the children’s faces as they play table tennis brings happiness in these difficult times. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Laptops, tablets and other IT equipment worth AUD19,000 was handed over to the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) to help with data collection of displaced people during disasters this week. The equipment and software is a gift from the International Organization for Migration.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga's domestic fibre optic telecommunications cable was torn apart by tremendous forces and deeply buried under volcanic debris on the ocean floor. It may take up to a year to fix. Tonga Cable Ltd. is looking worldwide for anyone with a 110km spare cable, but it may have to be specially manufactured and delivered from France. It was one of two cables broken during the Jan. 15 eruption. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A Pangaimotu Island monument was cleaned up by a work party from HMAS Adelaide during a small islands clean-up operation, following the devasting tsunamis and ash fall from the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption on January 15. Navy and Army personnel scrubbed the cross clean from the sand and ash and cut overgrown vegetation. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Discrepancies in breakdown of the COVID-19 (Omicron variant) figures for Tonga released by the government's press conferences, continue to confuse people who are trying to follow exactly how many cases have tested negative/recovered since recording of cases began on 29 October last year. There were 55 new cases reported today, and 57 new negatives/recoveries. It seems likely there were a further 60 recoveries that were not specified.
