Tonga’s 2017-18 Parliament was scheduled to end on 31 October 2018, but the session has continued into November because of difficulties the House faces in processing a Petition signed by 3,330 people calling for the Impeachment of the Prime Minister and six Cabinet Ministers. It will cost around $45,000 pa‘anga for the Tongan Parliament to send a delegation of six people, including the Speaker Lord Fakafanua, “to show Parliament’s unwavering support for Mate Ma’a Tonga” on Saturday. But the Clerk of the House said the figure had yet to be finalised as some MPs who are overseas might join the delegation in Auckland.

A claim by the Prime Minister, Hon. ‘Akilisi Pohiva that a property of Sea Star Ltd. at the Tu‘imatamoana Wharf had been sold for $3 million pa’anga and was now owned by a Chinese/Tongan, was questioned in parliament during debate on the Annual Report of the Ministry of Fisheries. But it appeared that the PM was mistaken. He later started talking about a $3 million loan to Sea Star during the time of Tupou V.

Tonga's Prime Minister told parliament yesterday, Thursday September 20, that he wanted to send all members to prison, including himself, because they did not take action on an Auditor General's annual report from 2012-13 that had been previously presented to parliament.
