A national budget of $599.27 million Tongan Pa’anga was tabled into parliament on Monday, 10 June by the Minister for Finance, Hon. Dr Pohiva Tu‘i‘onetoa. The Minister initially labelled his 2019-2020 budget as a “balanced budget”, but then settled to call it a “half-cast balanced budget”, because only 51% or $305 million is financed by the government itself. The bill attempts to remove the authority of the King to appoint a Police Commissioner, handing over that right to Cabinet.

King Tupou VI, in a message for the closing of the Tonga Legislative Assembly's 2018-19 session today, said there was a lot of work to be done to develop our country. The king's short message, delivered by Lord Vaea, urged all Tongans to be prepared for the effects of climate change, and stressed that the work of Parliament and Government must be carried out in accordance with the Constitution and with dignity. The Prime Minister was absent from the closure.
