Lord Vaha’i has won a seat in parliament after winning a coin toss against Lord Vaea after he tied with the former Tongatapu No. 1 Noble's Representative.

Polling stations across Tonga opened this morning at 9:00am for the 2017 General Election to elect the 17 People's Representatives to the Legislative Assembly.

Nobles and Life Peers are not subject to the same scrutiny given to the nominations for the People's Representatives.

An election reporting workshop for journalists, alongside media presentation training for women candidates in Tonga's 2017 general election, is being held from October 30 to November 3, in Nuku'alofa.

Tonga needs to elect the right people and voters need to carefully consider what type of candidate they want to vote into parliament, HRH Princess Pilolevu said this morning, in opening a National Dialogue on Democracy Symposium at the Fa'onelua Centre. "We utterly need to elect the right people. We need those that would not change their colours like an octopus," the Princess said.

Tongan registered voters who are residing abroad must in Tonga to vote in the November 16 General Election.
