I am concerned about the obsessive bitterness that your correspondent, Mele Payne Lynch, seems to harbour towards the Hon. Prime Minister, Dr. Feleti Sevele, which in turn tends to prejudice everything she has to say in her frequent letters to your column. - Lopeti Senituli

The situation in Tonga is precarious. As the Minister of Finance is feverishly trying to bounce the economy back with ambitious policies, the Prime Minister and Parliamentarians look for equilibrium in opposite directions, which explains the same old arguments, same old excuses and lack of domestic achievements. - Mele Payne Lynch

Readers who were responding to my comments on "Children and Obscenity" appeared not to fully comprehend my position. So once again, I hereby want to make my position clear. My position is my wish that something is done to prevent children of a certain age from watching shows like the Miss Galaxy Pageant which are perhaps too obscene and/or pornographic for them to handle. - Siosaia Fatani

With respect to the Galaxy show, there are scenes the audiences finds humor, to others it's vice versa. Everyone has the rights to their opinion, and one is entitle to it. It will be nice to encourage an age limit, (not forgetting nightclubs), but it's simply complicated as; "no laws for seat belts, yet rule of thumb is, put your seat belts on for prevention!!" Parliament probably believes seat belts are common sense, "who needs to enforce it?" Will be a legend. - Local Parent

The decision by the Tonga Legislative Assembly to select three People's Representatives, Clive Edwards, 'Akilisi Pohiva and 'Uliti Uata to be members of a Tripartite Committee to vet political reform proposals for Tonga is as much a set back in our strive for political reform in Tonga in the 21st century as was the destruction in Nuku'alofa on November 16 last year. The reason why I brought up this issue in my last letter was my fear that the two small children, approximately 4-6 years of age who were sitting close to me, would in one way or another be adversely affected by the fakaleitis' performances. May I remind you Ms. Telesia Finau that the young children of Tonga too have constitutional rights to appropriate and beneficial environment of education. - Siosaia Fatani

My fellow Tongans - I am writing this letter to remind you all that the deadline for showing your interest in the Tonga Communication Corporation Shares is Friday-20/07/2007. This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to invest in this Tongan Company and build it up to become successful for future generations. - Senolita Swan

Should the parents, government, and the Galaxy Queen Pageant consider banning these young children from being exposed to such prurient and lustful performances? - Siosaia Fatani

I agree with William Mariner's last letter to Matangitonga on the issue of the new tax system. The so called tax reform will only choke infant business and lessen the chance for local Tongans to engage in small business ventures. I am just anxious as to what other types of taxes the government has in store for the poor. - Freddy Kavaha‘apai

Tonga's turmoil with the economy and politics in the last decade has been decaying away and will continue to decay. During the strikes, I wrote a letter to MatangiTonga and stating that the future of Tonga is gloomy. This forecast is an understatement and has not been witnessed yet, even after the burning of the central business area. - William Mariner

Am I alone in thinking that some of the People's Representatives in Parliament have lost the plot altogether. There they were last week with the most important issue of the day, the Budget for 2007/2008, an opportunity for members of Parliament to analyse and scrutinise the figures, particularly the Income Tax Reform on behalf of the people who voted them in. What did they do - well, nothing in particular. Oh - they approved the first reading, the second and the third all in one go! - Senolita Swan

Please allow me a brief response to Dr. Ma'afu'otu'itonga Palu's letter of 29 May 2007 under the title, "The Tongan law makers," in which he posed the questions whether it is ". . . lawful that PRs under criminal charges for sedition be admitted to one of the decision-making body of our country?" and should " . . . they really be granted all their rightful financial benefits funded by the taxpayers while they stand trial for crimes committed not only against the Tongan government but also against Tongan citizens?" - Lopeti Senituli
