The rapid construction of 150 prefabricated container houses in and around Nuku'alofa, should be completed by Friday, 16 August 2024, the CEO of Tonga Assets Managers and Associates (TAMA), Tevita Hu’akau, told Matangi Tonga today.

A US$1.9 million grant from the Government of Japan will provide Tonga Fire & Emergency Services with firefighting trucks including two pumper trucks, two water tanker trucks, and three pick up trucks. Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku signed this grant under Japan's Non-Project Grant Aid (NPGA) this morning, at his office, at St. George Government building, Nuku’alofa.

A new tugboat for Tonga was commissioned by HM King Tupou VI today, 23 July, at the Taufa'ahau Domestic Wharf, Nuku'alofa. The new tugboat, named "Fanga'ilifuka" by the King, is a grant from the Government of Japan

Nineteen Peace Corps trainees were welcomed to Tonga with a traditional Tongan Kava Ceremony at Fasi in Nuku'alofa on Friday 21 June 2024.

Tongan media representatives held discussions around the impacts of disinformation, misinformation, and malinformation faced by Pacific Island communities, at a workshop hosted by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) and Royal Oceania Institute (ROI) today, 8 May, at Tanoa Hotel, in Nuku'alofa.

Yesterday, a delegation, made up of members of the United States Congress and the United Nations Foundation (UNF), visited areas recovering from the impacts of the HTHH eruption on Tongatapu, including the ‘Atata community at ‘Atata Si’i in Hihifo. During a one-day visit to Tonga they also held key meetings with Government and civil society, as well as visits to schools, UN-supported projects, and the Vaiola Hospital.

Three floriculture nurseries sheltering thousands of flowering orchids and anthuriums, were officially opened by HM Queen Nanasipau'u this week at the MORDI base in Havelu, Tongatapu. The nurseries will help to elevate the floriculture industry in Tonga and in the region, providing livelihoods for rural women.

A $1.12 million water tank project funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will provide a safe and climate resilient water supply for some schools in Tonga. At the signing of the agreement on 20 March, the Acting CEO for Finance, Ms. Pisila ‘Otunuku, said that the project will ensure the sustainable management of water that is safe, clean, and accessible, especially for the children and vulnerable people.

A newly upgraded water supply system for Houma was handed over to the village by the Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, HE Mr Inagaki Hisao last Friday, 8 March 2024.
