A project to improve the perimeter of the Royal Tombs in Nuku'alofa, funded by China, was launched this morning, with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by HM Queen Nanasipau’u, with HSH Prince Kalaniuvalu, HSH Prince Tu’ipelehake, Hon. Fatafehi Lapaha Tuita, and Lord Fakafanua.

Popua Middle School, where enrolment has more than doubled in three years, will receive a new classroom, and the villages of Tokomololo and Navutoka will have upgraded water supply systems, under new grant funding from Japan, signed by the new Ambassador for Japan, HE Mr Inagaki Hisao, last week.

A team from Tonga's Ministry of Infrastructure is visiting the National Transport Research Organisations (NTRO), in NTRO headquarters in Port Melbourne, Australia, to discuss NTRO works and the future of road infrastructure, including airport, and wharves.

The Fanga’uta Lagoon Bridge project, that was expected to be completed in 2024, is ongoing and projected to be completed within the next three years. A procurement deadline is coming up in March this year, but the project co-ordinator said that the geo-survey work had been completed and now the funding was being finalized.

Tonga's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (MAFF) will receive equipment worth over USD2 million, under Japan's Non-Project Grant Aid (NPGA), signed by the Minister, Lord Fohe, and the Ambassador-designate of Japan to Tonga, HE Mr Inagaki Hisao, yesterday, 11 January, in Nuku'alofa.

The popular beachfront at Popua in the capital, Nuku'alofa, is looking cleaner today, thanks to a group of university students from New Zealand who decided to spend their last day in Tonga picking up rubbish. The group of 15 young women from throughout New Zealand, led by Leata Loelu, have spent a fortnight in Tonga engaging in community services.

The quality of Tonga's water supplies will come into focus next week, when stakeholders come together for a workshop to look at water supply and sanitation management. The Water Safety Planning process will result in a Quality Risk Assessment for the Nuku’alofa Water Supply System. At a second workshop, the Ministry of Health and ADB, will present findings from a recent pilot study on Village Water Supply systems in Tongatapu.

More than 200 houses were connected to the grid for the first time after Phase three of the Nuku’alofa Network Upgrade Project (NNUP) was completed.
