Tonga's Prime Minister acknowledged the strong commitment of Tonga's development partners and donors and said financial assistance is still needed to ensure a prosperous Tonga, on opening the Development Partners Forum 2023, on 28 February. He said Government’s additional financing needs in the medium term are estimated at $84.5 million pa'anga in 2023-24, $88.3m in 2024-25, and $79.5m in 2025-26.

Tonga was the first country to complete its disaster risk survey out of 13 Pacific islands countries. The results of the survey under the PCRAFI II project were presented at a half-day workshop yesterday, 15 February, 2023.

A Market Development Facility will be established in Tonga with an estimated value of activities worth around AU$3.8 million, in its initial four-year phase.

Pacific Island countries aim to strengthen their regional seismic network and find ways to improve their multi-hazard early warning systems in the South-West Pacific region, where about 30% of global seismicity is observed and 15% of deadly tsunamis are generated. The challenges were addressed at the 7th Annual Meeting of the Oceania Regional Seismic Network was held for the first time in Nuku’alofa, on 17-19 October, followed by the 7th Session of the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System Working Committee on 20-21 October.

Tonga Meteorological Services plans to improve early warnings and early responses to hazards and threats, by expanding the use of mobile phones to receive early warning alerts. The development is supported by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
