The Court of Appeal withdrew $1 million out of the total $2 million fine initially imposed by the Supreme Court on the Ashika ferry operator Shipping Corporation of Polynesia Ltd. over the Ashika sinking with the loss of many lives in 2009.

Although Tonga's Legislative Assembly discussed and criticized the practice of campaigning by members during their annual parliamentary tour to their constituencies, which is paid for by the House, no action was taken to curb the practice. Some PRs went out to hear what their constituencies needed, but one PR said he had a different approach and he went out to tell constituents what the government and house needed. The House ended up arguing about the burning of Nuku'alofa before abruptly changing the subject. From the House, by Pesi Fonua.

John Jonesse, who was serving five years imprisonment in Tonga's Huatolitoli Prison for conviction arising from the tragedy of the sinking of the MV Princess Ashika ferry, was released immediately this afternoon, September 30 following a successful appeal against the length of his sentence.

Tonga Power announced that The new electricity tariff for the Kingdom of Tonga will decrease by a total of 4.72 seniti to 93.28 seniti per kWh for electricity consumed in September on all four island networks. The new electricity tariff is effective from the meter readings taken as at the 1st of October 2011.
