The Supreme Court in Nuku‘alofa will hear three Causes of Action filed by John Cauchi, against the Government of Tonga on November 19-21, 2013. Cauchi, Tonga’s former Attorney General, is claiming over AUD$500,000 in special damages and relief.

I am surprised by the reaction from within Tonga and abroad regarding the MA60 and its "safety" record. It seems to be largely scaremongering and overstated comments by an under-informed public. While I agree there are better suited aircraft for Tonga ... I don't personally think the MA60 deserves its bad rap, and everyone needs to calm down. What people really need to worry about is not the aircraft but crew competency and airport safety. - Peter White

I have just googled the so called “safe” plane the Deputy Prime Minister has referred to and have found an interesting history of accidents, which I have cut and pasted from Wikipedia. What concerns me the most is the recent record from 2009 to well, last month – two accidents in one day. - Concerned Tongan.

The New Zealand government has suspended its promised multi-million dollar aid to develop tourism in Tonga, over safety concerns around the new Chinese-made MA60 aircraft that the Tonga government plans to use for the domestic inter-island service.

A young man (19) died in a house fire, while three others escaped, on early Sunday morning July 7, at Halaleva in Tongatapu. Police investigating the blaze said the three who escaped did not know that the victim, who was their friend, was sleeping inside the timber house.

Tonga's government celebrated the gift of a new MA60 aircraft from China at a handover ceremony attended by King Tupou VI at the Fua'amotu Domestic Airport on Saturday July 6. Deputy Prime Minister Samiu Vaipulu, who sought the aircraft from China, said in an emotional speech that it was the first of its type in the region, but it was sad that it had not been accepted by the United States and New Zealand.
