A prominent local businessman, baker, Alfred Francis Cowley (62), passed away on Saturday 19 August, in hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, his family have confirmed. He was the fourth generation of Cowley's who have been baking in Tonga for over 130 years.

The announcement by the Speaker of the Tongan Parliament, Lord Fakafanua in Parliament on 16 August that the House is no longer funding the daily radio broadcast of the Proceedings of the House, surprised members of Parliament. It was also a shocking announcement for members of the public who were keenly listening to the debate on the Auditor General's Report for 2021-2022. The Auditor's Report exposes a litany of weaknesses in many Ministries and reveals the wide extent of inadequate reporting of government expenditures. It raises concerns about government's recent capital expenditures, inadequate assets registers and discrepancies between the Sun System and Ministries financial reports. From the House by Pesi Fonua.

Over 70,000 Tongans living in the United States will now have access to Tongan passport printing services in California. Crown Prince Tupouto‘a ‘Ulukalala launched the new Tongan passport printing services at the Tonga Consulate General in San Francisco on Friday 10 August and said the development recognized the important contribution the diaspora make to the Tongan economy.

A 45 year old man who exported methamphetamine from Tonga is the first person to receive a mandatory life sentence under a tough new drugs law. Nomani Kama Manulevu (45) from Nukuhetulu was sentenced to life imprisonment for the unlawful exportation of 29.7 kgs of methamphetamine that was concealed in a refrigerated container to New Zealand in 2021.

The new petroleum prices for August - September will significantly increase from tomorrow Friday 18 August. The Ministry of Trade and Economic Development said that the increase in the price of all grades in Tonga this month is due to the annual review price rise combined with higher international product prices.

Trafficking in Persons, a crime where victims are exploited in various forms of slavery, is coming under a new scrutiny in Tonga. Ever since Tonga prosecuted its first Trafficking in Persons (TIP) case over a decade ago, there have been no further cases of TIP because there were no new trafficking investigations and victims were not identified, says Police Deputy Commissioner and Chief of Staff, Pelenatita Vaisuai. Sosefo Sakalia and Kyren Taumoefolau each scored two tries and Vaea Fifita and Sam Moli one each for Tonga. Isaac Olson scored both tries for Canada. Peter Nelson kicked the conversion.
