Heavy rain and flash flood warning for Tongatapu, Ha'apai, and 'Eua

A heavy rain warning and flash flood advisory are now inforce for Tongatapu, 'Eua, and Ha'apai land areas, Tonga Meteorological Services issued at 1:00 pm this afternoon.

An active trough from the southwest is approaching Tongatapu, 'Eua and Ha'apai by this afternoon.

A strong wind warning is now in force for Tongatapu and 'Eua land areas.

“Associated clouds with occasional rain, strong gusty winds with isolated thunderstorms is expected to affect these island divisions until this Friday, 27 December.”

Forecast to midnight tonight for Tonga

Tonga Met forecast to midnight tonight for the Niuas and Vava'u, light to moderate north to northwesterly winds.

Mainly fine then becoming cloudy with occasional showers later tomorrow, 24 December, especially over Vava'u.

For Ha'apai, Tongatapu, and 'Eua, moderate north to northwest winds, fresh to strong at times by later tonight especially over Tongatapu and 'Eua.

Mostly cloudy or overcast with occasional rain, heavy at times with isolated thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, possible flooding in low lying areas due to heavy rain.

Outlook for Christmas day for all of Tonga

Light to moderate north to northwesterly winds, become fresh to strong at times.

Forecast to midnight tomorrow for Tonga coastal waters

For Ha'apai, Tongatapu, 'Eua, Tele-ki-Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau coastal waters, north to northwest winds 10 - 20 knots, rising up to 25-30 knots at times.

Moderate to rough seas (up to 3 metres), with poor visibilities in areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

For the Niuas and Vava'u coastal waters, north to northwest winds 10 - 15 knots rising up to 20 knots at times, and slight to moderate seas (up to 2 metres).

For Vava'u, Ha'apai, Tongatapu, 'Eua, Tele-ki-Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau coastal waters, north to northwest winds 10 - 15 knots, rising up to 20-25 knots at times in the night time.

Moderate (up to 2.5 metres), and poor visibilities in areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

For the Niuas coastal waters, north to northwest winds 10-15 knots, and slight to moderate seas (up to 2 metres).
