An El Niño alert for Tonga was issued by the Meteorology Department, on 14 July, as forecasts show there is a 70% chance of El Niño forming this year. The likely impacts on Tonga will include cooler nights, less rainfall over the next 6-12 months, and more tropical cyclones in the next cyclone season from 1 November 2023 to 30 April 2024.

Repairs on the domestic submarine cable system connecting Tongatapu to Ha’apai and Vava’u were completed and back in service on Wednesday night, 12 July, after it was destroyed by the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha’apai volcanic eruption in January 2022. Over 108 kilometers of cable was used for the repair.
