The Tonga Secondary Entrance Examination (SEE) result this year revealed a low pass rate of 36% out of the 1399 Form 2 students in Tonga Government Middle Schools (GMS) who sat the examination.
The percentage of students achieving the passing mark (200) or better, is 36% although it is an improvement compared to 25% in 2023, according to the SEE result released by the Ministry of Education and Training on 20 December.
A total of 1399 Form 2 students in 2024 (up from 1325 in 2023) attempted the four subjects namely English, Mathematics, Science and Lea Faka-Tonga with a total aggregate mark of 400.
Outstandingly, one student scored 100 in English, which is the first full mark in English, since the implementation of the SEE in the Form 2 level.
There was an improvement in the subject percentages in particular in Science, English and Lea Faka-Tonga.
A total of 51 schools enrolled for the SEE, incuding 50 Government Middle Schools (GMS) and one Mission School, the Hilliard Memorial School, from the islands of Tongatapu, ‘Eua, Ha'apai, Vava'u, Niuatoputapu and Niuafo'ou
The number of Government Middle Schools are: 13 in Hahake, eight in Hihifo, and 11 in Central Tongatapu, one in Niuatoputapu, one in Niuafo'ou, nine in Vava'u, six in Ha'apai, and two in 'Eua.
The Ministry of Education stated that the recount or re-score process will commence on 6-17 January, 2025.
