Biodiversity conservation in Tonga and Fiji is vital for the development of its tourism sectors and must be managed properly to sustain the natural habitat, while providing a livelihood to communities. The importance of preserving biodiversity was made clear at this month’s High Level Roundtable discussions of the Thirteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP13) in Cancun, Mexico.

Uaine Fa Jnr. (aka Junior Fa) remembers defeating New Zealand’s champion fighter Joseph Parker back in 2012, in a qualifying amateur boxing competition for the London Olympics. Four years since that encounter, Fa is confident he can beat Parker again as a professional. Queen Nanasipau'u officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony today for the construction of a new 2 MW solar farm at Matatoa, Tofoa – the largest to be built in Tonga. The privately-funded $10 million pa'anga development by Zhuhai Singyes Green Building Technology Ltd. from Guangdong, China, is expected to be completed by June 2017. The company's investment in Tonga solar power generation is based on a long-term agreement to sell all the power they generate to Tonga Power Ltd.

The first ever shipment of Tongan squash to China left Tonga this week, after Tongatapu exporter Nishi Trading successfully passed a strict quarantine inspection on Saturday, 26 November 2016. This important achievement took 18 months of negotiation and inspections leading to an initial protocol between the Governments of China and Tonga in May. This initiative was supported by PHAMA - the Pacific Horticultural & Agricultural Market Access Program.

Growth in cargo volumes and the number of ships calling at the Port of Nuku’alofa, as well as operating efficiencies has resulted in a record dividend of $$1,617,862 for the financial year 2015/16 for the Ports Authority of Tonga. The dividend was declared by the Board of Directors on 1 December 2016, during their Annual General Meeting in Nuku'alofa, when the Chairman Mr Stephen Edwards, presented a dividend cheque to the Minister for Public Enterprises, Poasi Mataele Tei, for the shareholder, the Government of Tonga.
