Tonga's Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Eke was fired yesterday, a Sunday, by Prime Minister, Hon. ‘Akilisi Pohiva. The Minister of Finance says one of the reasons he was asked to resign was because he abstained from voting on the motion for a Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister on February 27.

Civil aviation authorities from China and New Zealand and the Pacific Islands looked at how to strengthen civil aviation safety in Tonga, at their meeting from February 15-17, in Nuku'alofa. There was also a push for direct China-Tonga flights.

A huge crack on the Antarctic Peninsula, across the Larsen C ice shelf, set to break free an enormous iceberg six times larger than Tonga’s combined landmass, is being monitored by scientists at Project MIDAS, an Antarctic research group. The crack is more than 100 miles in length and 1,500 feet across and the ice mass could break free within the next few months. The loss of the ice shelf, which acts as a barrier to the flow of land ice, can cause ice to move faster into the ocean contributing to a faster rise of global sea levels.

Tongans living in the New Zealand town of Nelson have established a community trust to serve Tongans living in the area.

The Tongan Parliament rejected the Motion for a Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister Hon. 'Akilisi Pohiva with votes of 14-10 this afternoon, Monday 27 February.
