The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) released its Monetary Policy Statement (MPS) for August 2024 following its approval by the Board of Directors. In collaboration with Government and other relevant stakeholders, the NRBT is introducing new financing instruments such as a concessional credit facility and a partial credit guarantee scheme to boost private sector financing towards stronger growth recovery in 2025, particularly fostering access to financing for underserved and climate change-vulnerable sectors.

'Alifeleti Uepi Latu (33) was sentenced to four years and one month imprisonment, with a part suspended, for numerous charges, which included serious housebreaking and theft of items valued at $22,750 from a house at Tofoa. The defendant was said to be an unemployed drug user who had relied on his mother's money transfers from the United States. He had previous convictions for theft, assault, domestic violence and bodily harm.

The Māori King, Tuheitia Paki, crowned Te Arikinui Kiingi Tuheitia, has died peacefully on Friday morning at the age of 69, New Zealand news media reported today. Kiingi Tuheitia succeeded his mother, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, following her death in 2006.
