Tropical Cyclone Vaianu intensifies to CAT 3 north west of Fiji

Tropical Cyclone “VAIANU” (CAT 2) has intensified into a Severe Category 3 cyclone at 7:00pmon Monday 6 April, located about 295km west north west of Suva, Fiji. “At the moment, the system does not pose any threat to the land areas of Tonga in the next 24-48 hrs,” stated Tonga Meteorological Service at 10:00pm

ADVICE SUMMARY:

Tropical Cyclone “VAIANU” (CAT 2) has intensified into a Severe Category 3 cyclone at 7:00pm this evening.

Severe TC VAIANU (CAT 3) was located near latitude 15.9 south and longitude 173.4 east or about 295km west northwest of Suva, Fiji, 1175km west of Niuafo’ou, 1370km west of Niuatoputapu, 1375km west northwest of Neiafu, Vava’u, 1365km west northwest of Pangai, Ha’apai, 1335km west northwest of Nuku’alofa at 7:00pm 6 April, 2026.

This system is moving southeast at a speed of 5 knots (10km/hr). The maximum wind near the centre is about 70 knots (140km/hr).

At the moment, the system does not pose any threat to the land areas of Tonga in the next 24-48 hrs.
