Tropical Cyclone Zazu (Cat. 1) is expected to move 60km south of Neiafu, Vava’u or 70km northeast of Muitoa, Ha’apai at 3:00pm today. In Vava'u, Tonga Met. Director ‘Ofa Fa’anunu, said the strongest gust recorded reached 62 knots at Lupepau’u Airport at 1:00am. Meanwhile, a second stronger Tropical Cyclone, TC Yasa (Cat. 3) continues to move slowly towards Fiji.

Above average rainfall is forecast across Tonga up to January 2021, according to the latest climate update from Tonga Meteorological Service. Tonga Met is also using traditional knowledge indicators to forecast tropical cyclones and so far, our mango trees, the birds and the bees and bananas are not indicating cyclones.

The body of a man, found floating on the shoreline of ‘Eua after it was struck by Cyclone Harold on Thursday Morning, 9 April, was not a cyclone victim, authorities confirmed today. 'Eua suffered the greatest impact of the cyclone in Tonga.

Liku‘alofa Beach Resort, on Tongatapu's southwest Sunset Coast, was demolished by severe Tropical Cyclone Harold (category 4) when it hit Tongatapu in the early hours of Thursday, April 9. Other resorts along the coast were also reported destroyed.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Harold (Category 4), located about 155 km West of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu at about 3:00am local time this morning, is expected to intensify into a Category 5 System today as it passes over Vanuatu. Tonga Met Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre is tracking the powerful storm, which may move south of Tonga by 8-10 April.
