It is unusual to see so many cyclones in the South Pacific at this time of the year, says Tonga's Director of Meteorology, 'Ofa Fa'anunu today, as northern Tonga remains on a Warning for Tropical Cyclone Ella [upgraded to Category 2 this evening 10 May 2017]. Tonga has not experienced an out of season cyclone since Severe Tropical Cyclone Keli in June 1997.

A tropical cyclone warning is now in force for the Niuas, issued by Tonga's Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone warning centre this afternoon as a tropical depression 22f was located about 145km northeast of Niuatoputapu or 319km east of Niuafo'ou at 1:00pm today. The system is moving west-northwest at about 7 knots (14km/hr) and it is likely to become a tropical cyclone in the next 12-24 hours.

A heavy rain and flash flooding warning has been issued by Tonga’s Meteorology Department for Tongatapu, ‘Eua, Vava’u and Ha’apai at 1:00pm today. Residents in low-lying areas are warned to be alert for possible flash flooding over Monday night and Tuesday.

Exceptionally heavy, unseasonal rainfall fell across Tongatapu on June 10-11 causing flooding in Nuku’alofa, and turning the capital into a city of lakes, during what is supposed to be the “dry season”. Fua’amotu recorded 273.1mm of rainfall in the 24 hours between 1:00pm Friday and 1:00pm Saturday, according to Tonga Met., a record rainfall for a single day in the month of June.

Tropical Cyclone Amos is still intensifying and on its current track is expected to reach Category 3 strength by 1:00pm Saturday April 23 and lie about 300km north of Niuafo’ou or about 385km North Northwest of Niuatoputapu. Strong winds may affect Niuafo’ou land area from early Saturday morning and Niuatoputapu land area from late Saturday to Sunday. Gale force winds are expected over open waters to the north of the two Niuas from tomorrow morning and Sunday, advises Tonga Met.

Strong wind warnings are currently in place for all land and sea areas of Vava’u and the Niuas as Tropical Cyclone Amos slowly intensifies and tracks towards the Niuas and Samoa today, warns the Tonga Meteorology Department. The cyclone Category 2 is moving southeast and has the potential to develop into a Category 3 storm over the next few days.

A storm warning for Tongatapu, ‘Eua and Ha’apai was cancelled at 2:45pm this afternoon by the Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, but strong winds may still be experienced this evening. The fast moving Tropical Cyclone Zena (Cat. 1) that was approaching Tonga from the West this morning has been downgraded from Category 2 to Category 1 by Tonga Met this afternoon.
