For the first time in 60 years, only one tropical storm has struck the Southern Hemisphere so far this year in Indonesia in late November, compared to an average of at least five storms by Christmas Day. However, at least eight to 10 tropical cyclones are expected to hit this season, while the sea temperature is warmer than usual.

It is unusual to see so many cyclones in the South Pacific at this time of the year, says Tonga's Director of Meteorology, 'Ofa Fa'anunu today, as northern Tonga remains on a Warning for Tropical Cyclone Ella [upgraded to Category 2 this evening 10 May 2017]. Tonga has not experienced an out of season cyclone since Severe Tropical Cyclone Keli in June 1997.

A tropical cyclone warning is now in force for the Niuas, issued by Tonga's Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone warning centre this afternoon as a tropical depression 22f was located about 145km northeast of Niuatoputapu or 319km east of Niuafo'ou at 1:00pm today. The system is moving west-northwest at about 7 knots (14km/hr) and it is likely to become a tropical cyclone in the next 12-24 hours.
