Two Tongan Navy patrol boats were moved out from Masefield Naval Base at Touliki to anchor in deeper water offshore this morning, as a low pressure system brought strong winds and gales into Tongatapu. Strong winds and heavy rain are expected to continue throughout the day and more rough weather is forecast for the weekend. Tonga Met maintained a storm warning in its 1:00pm advisory.

Four fishermen who were rescued on Friday night, 13 March after their boat’s engine failed some 54 nautical miles south of Tongatapu were today thankful to New Zealand’s Orion P-3 aircraft and Tongan Navy for the swift search and rescue operation.

Four fishermen who activated a live beacon on Thursday night, 12 March after their boat’s engine failed 54 nautical miles south of Tongatapu, have been rescued by a Tongan Navy vessel, after an aerial search by a New Zealand Orion P-3 located their position.

A foreign fishing vessel boarded by the Tonga Navy’s VOEA Neiafu patrol boat last week, was apprehended after failing to produce its original fishing license in Tonga, was later released on Monday, May 26.

Tonga Police were notified of a vessel in distress at 6.15pm on Friday 8 October 2010. RCC New Zealand advised they had received notification of a distress call from the crew of the French Yacht La Tortue that struck a reef near Kelefesia Island in the Haapai Group.
