Families who lost their houses in the tsunamis on January 15, will be assisted by government to rebuild homes. A groundbreaking ceremony to start the “Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai Volcanic Eruption Tsunami Recovery Project” was held on February 28 at Patangata and Sopu on the coast of the capital.

A total of 174 repatriated passengers, were released from the Tanoa Hotel quarantine on Tuesday, March 1, after testing negative to COVID-19. Dr Reynold ‘Ofanoa said those arriving on the next repatriation flights, who would like to quarantine in their own homes can write a letter to the Ministry of Health, who will inspect the homes before approvals.

Bank of South Pacific Tonga Limited today announced a Net Profit After Tax of T$11.85 million for the financial year ending 31 December 2021. The result was driven by the release of Covid-19 provisions, good foreign exchange revenue, and strong transaction volumes. BSP Tonga Country Head, Mrs Marcellina Wolfgramm-Haapai said this result was 20% above the 2020 financial result.

The trauma of their recent experiences will no doubt remain with the displaced communities for a long time to come – but, in the meantime, the smiles of joy on the children’s faces as they play table tennis brings happiness in these difficult times.

Tonga's domestic fibre optic telecommunications cable was torn apart by tremendous forces and deeply buried under volcanic debris on the ocean floor. It may take up to a year to fix. Tonga Cable Ltd. is looking worldwide for anyone with a 110km spare cable, but it may have to be specially manufactured and delivered from France. It was one of two cables broken during the Jan. 15 eruption.

A Pangaimotu Island monument was cleaned up by a work party from HMAS Adelaide during a small islands clean-up operation, following the devasting tsunamis and ash fall from the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption on January 15. Navy and Army personnel scrubbed the cross clean from the sand and ash and cut overgrown vegetation.
