Similarly in Japan 11 years ago. It is said that many years are still needed to care for the victims’ minds and regain the lost daily life. The COVID-19 virus has reached Ha’apai, with 29 positive cases confirmed out of the 126 people who travelled from Nuku’alofa to the outer islands, last week. Meanwhile, a total of 363 new cases were recorded in the whole of Tonga over a 24 hour period up to 6:00am today, bringing the total number of active cases in Tonga to 2,919. Positive cases in Tonga are forecast to peak at 1,000 cases per day by mid-April. Three people have died from COVID-19 and another six positive cases died from underlying illnesses.

Over 300 people, mainly on Tongatapu, have been arrested and charged for breaching curfews, not wearing masks or not social distancing, as required under the regulations under the Tonga Emergency Management Act since February 2. Tonga Police said they are assisted by town and district officers and community patrols to report those who breach the lockdown restrictions in villages.

People on Tongatapu and Vava’u are currently under a one week ‘hard lockdown’ after a spike in the number COVID-19 cases, which reached 2376 active cases in the past 24-hours. With all shops closed, Tonga Red Cross said that most people had prepared for the week lockdown, which started on Sunday. Since then they had received about 20 calls from people who needed supplies.
