The first Pacific-led and member-owned climate and disaster resilience financing facility, the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF) will be headquartered in Tonga. The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is undergoing major reform, that will cover the processes that countries, including Tonga and the Pacific, use to access funds and investments, GCF’s Head of Vulnerability and Communications, Stephanie Speck said today, in Nuku’alofa. One of the reforms is reducing the timeframe of dispersing funds, from 14 to four months.

Tonga's domestic fibre-optic submarine communications cable went out again yesterday following a series of strong earthquakes, centred in Ha'apai, that also shook the capital. Tonga Cable Acting CEO Mr Sosafate Kolo confirmed the outage, to Matangi Tonga this afternoon. Cable communications to Vava'u and Ha'apai are cut.

The Prime Minister Hon. Hu'akavameiliku will remain as Acting Minister for both Defence and Foreign Affairs throughout the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Tonga. The United Nations Secretary General and the Commonwealth Secretary General will arrive in Tonga tomorrow to attend the Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting next week. The Forum expects to have 21 countries coming to the meeting as dialogue partners.
