Seawater around the active Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai volcano is contaminated with toxic volcanic discharge and local fishermen should assume that fish in these waters are poisonous, or poisonous if consumed, Tongan authorities warned today.

A total of 37 earthquakes occurred within Tonga in the month of September, but none of them were felt by communities, the Tonga Geological Services, reported in its Tonga Seismic Bulletin for September. (Yesterday's 6.7mi felt tremor will be covered in their October bulletin).

Only two out of 33 earthquakes that occurred in Tonga during the month of August were felt, according to the new Tonga Geological Services Seismic Bulletin of 4 September. The number of earthquakes was not unusual for Tonga, which is located within the Pacific Ring of Fire.

A new bigger island has formed following an eruption at Lateiki Island (aka Metis Shoal) last month 13 – 31 October, The remnants of the former island have submerged in the location between Kao and Late in the Ha’apai group.

There was no tsunami threat from two 6.1 magnitude earthquakes felt in Nuku'alofa early this morning, the Tonga Meteorological Service advised.
