Tonga's National Retirement Benefit Fund Board has taken up a 15% shareholding of the government-owned Tonga Development Bank, under a current restructuring of its capital base. The Minister of Finance said that the legislative amendments will not only remove the TDB from being under the Public Enterprises Act, but also change the ministerial responsibility.

The Tonga Government has allocated $1 million to finance a new Agricultural Export Marketing Fund aimed at providing short term loans to exporters who buy exportable produce from farmers. Three agricultural produce exporting companies have been selected to access the funds.

In a Press Release on Friday June 29, the Ministry of Finance and National Planning stated that during times of economic slowdown it remained the responsibility of government to protect the livelihood of its most vulnerable people. The Prime Minister told parliament that government is proposing a $1.6 million Social Benefits Scheme for the Elderly to be implemented on 1 September 2012, which is based on monthly stipend of about $65 pa'anga for 2,082 eligible people as reported in the 2006 Census.
