Tonga's Police Commissioner Grant O'Fee said today that New Zealand Police officer Kali Fungavaka was beaten to death in Tonga. Two policemen who were charged with assault in connection with his death in police custody, will now face new upgraded charges of manslaughter in court on Monday, September 3, while a murder charge against a civilian will be reduced from murder to manslaughter.

Tonga's Commissioner of Police said that the two officers arrested in connection with the death of New Zealand Police Officer Kali Fungavaka were today suspended from the police. Meanwhile, police are seeking witnesses who were in the vicinity of the "Time Out" bar on Hala Taufa'ahau on the night of August 17.

Tonga's Police Commissioner Grant O'Fee said that the cause of death of New Zealand Police officer Kali Fungavaka in Tonga would be determined by an autopsy to be completed in New Zealand, and the report expected at the end of the week would assist a Tonga police enquiry.

Magistrate Pita Soakimi this morning queried why only one civilian, Semisi Kalisitiane Manu, was charged with the new count of murder in relation to the death of New Zealand policeman Kali Fungavaka who was injured while in Police custody, while two policemen have not been similarly charged.

Tonga's Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Soakai Motu'apuaka said this morning that the body of Kali Fungavaka had been released to his family and taken to the Fua'amotu International Airport for return to New Zealand today.

I was shocked and saddened to read the news that a New Zealand Police Officer has died after an incident in the Police cells at Nuku'alofa Police Station. Kali Fungavaka, the New Zealand Police officer whose family at Fua'amotu was informed he had died at Vaiola Hospital this morning, is now confirmed to be held in a serious critical condition on life support. It is understood that hIs children have arrived in Tonga and other family were travelling from New Zealand to be with him tonight.
