Following this morning's magnitude 7 earthquake, Nomuka Island in Ha'apai experienced a temporary disruption to both electricity and communications. Nomuka Town Officer, 'Elenoa Moala, told to Matangi Tonga that these services were restored within half an hour after the earthquake.

At least 3000 to 4000 people swiftly evacuated from the Nuku'alofa coastal areas to evacuation centres and inland areas in Tongatapu after the tsunami warning was issued last night, likely influenced by lessons learned from the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai event, said NDRMO Director, Mr. Mafua Maka. "Many families quickly moved inland, with some parking in safer, higher areas and staying in their vehicles."

Tongan students at the University of the South Pacific in Vanuatu, this year, say they had returned home after their exams, before the devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Port Vila yesterday. The Government of Vanuatu, stated last night that most of the damage was in Port Vila, Efate. There were 14 confirmed deaths, and many injured or missing.

Tonga's domestic fibre-optic submarine communications cable went out again yesterday following a series of strong earthquakes, centred in Ha'apai, that also shook the capital. Tonga Cable Acting CEO Mr Sosafate Kolo confirmed the outage, to Matangi Tonga this afternoon. Cable communications to Vava'u and Ha'apai are cut.

Tongan civil defence authorities called for a major evacuation of low-lying areas in Tongatapu and Ha'apai this morning, urging people to move inland to higher ground, after a strongly shaking 6.7 magnitude earthquake was felt in Tongatapu, Ha’apai, and Vava’u at 9:47 am (TOT) today, 27 May 2024. An urgent tsunami alert issued at 9:55am local time was cancelled at 11:00am, after the tsunami threat passed. So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

An upgrade to Tonga’s Seismic Network will cover five strategically positioned stations at Nukuhetulu, Tongatapu; Mt. Talau Vava’u; Hihifo, Ha’apai; Niuafo’ou High School, Niuafo’ou; and Hihifo. Niuatoputapu, where upgrades to infrastructure will help to better monitor and detect earthquakes. The work is being funded by the World Bank through the Pacific Resilience Program (PREP).

Tonga is currently on a tsunami watch after a strong unverified earthquake has been felt in the vicinity of Tonga this morning Sunday 16 June. Tonga's National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) is activated. Meanwhile, the NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii forecast tsunami waves of less than 0.3 metres above tide level for Pacific Islands coasts including Tonga (forecasted) following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the Kermadec Islands Region. The M 5.7 earthquake rattled houses and woke people, who stayed indoors sheltering from the gale force winds and heavy rains brought to Tonga overnight by Tropical Cyclone Winston - an unusual cyclone that is worrying weather experts because it is moving north.
