Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Nine scholarships were awarded to young students with a passion for science, on May 4, by Tonga Offshore Mining Limited (TOML), a subsidiary of The Metals Company, under its 2022 Scholarship Program in Tonga. Winners were presented with their certificates of merit by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Lord Tu'i'afitu and Ms Pele Pome'e. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Two men, aged in their 20s, were spared death penalties and, instead, sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, after bludgeoning to death the victim, Fanaafi Misifane (35), at Holonga in 2019. A third man was sentenced to eight-years for manslaughter. The death was a tragedy, said the judge. “Mr Misifane was killed on the ground where he lay. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Chairman of the Shared Board Transport Sector (PAT, TAL, FISA), Dr. Sione Ngongo Kioa presented a cheque of $1,642,689 million (75% of net profit after tax) to the representative of the shareholder, the Minister for Public Enterprises and Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Poasi Mataele Tei, on May 4, as dividend of the Ports Authority Tonga (PAT) for the financial year 2020/21 during their 2022 Annual General Meeting, held at the Fa‘onelua Convention Centre, Nuku‘alofa. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga’s lockdown orange level restrictions will ease further with gyms, bars, and kava clubs, allowed to open, starting from Saturday May 7, confirmed Prime Minister Hon. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A meeting of the Legislative Assembly will be held on 16 May to unseat two Members of Parliament from their seats, after their elections were voided by the Supreme Court of Tonga. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The election of Tatafu Moeaki as the Tongatapu No. 4 People’s Representative to the Legislative Assembly was declared void by a Supreme Court judge today, who found that he committed bribery on two occasions, in the lead-up to the November 2021 General Election. Moeaki, the current Minister of Finance, is the second Cabinet Minister the court has found to have committed the offence of bribery under the Electoral Act.Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach arrived in Tonga for a short visit to show solidarity, after the devastation caused by the volcanic eruption and tsunamis on 15 January. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : After the challenges we have experienced to connectivity as a result of COVID-19, I am delighted the physical links between Australia and Tonga are building back. We are looking forward to greater flight connectivity between Tonga and Australia beginning this June, and I thank the Government of Tonga for taking the initiative to increase the frequency of passenger flights between our countries. While our physical links were temporarily less frequent, the link of friendship has always been strong.
