In a New Year's pep talk Tonga's Prime Minister told the civil service that Government reform is on the cards in 2019, even though some returning scholars do not want to implement reforms. The PM promised there would be in-house training to address what he believed was "a mindset problem”. He also urged the well-educated, unmarried women in his office to look for husbands.

There is nothing wrong with a bit of fatherly pep talk huh, to kick off the new year? Telling female staff to consider tying the knot is interfering in another person's freedom. What message is being sent out? It's the beginning, first a friendly hint, then a firm talk to, next Do It! It's been done before by leaders who went from being benevolent to a dictator. So watch out.

We're in 2019 and Tonga Prime Minister speaks like that to those ladies,"to look for a husband". It is unbelievable, nothing to do with him as a Prime Minister, that is private matters of those women, and let alone he is a man and he has no right to speak like that to those women.
I am sorry but when I read your news, it makes me sad to think Tonga is still talking down to women, where is our value as a Tongan? I am a Tongan born in Tonga but now I live in New Zealand, and I still uphold the values that I learn from my parents, perhaps that Tongan Prime Minister needs to remind himself that those women are his staff, co-workers and not his children, and they are entitled for respect as women.
Who got the mindset? Does the Prime Minister tell his children to get a husband?
Thank you, Adi Litia.
