In a New Year's pep talk Tonga's Prime Minister told the civil service that Government reform is on the cards in 2019, even though some returning scholars do not want to implement reforms. The PM promised there would be in-house training to address what he believed was "a mindset problem”. He also urged the well-educated, unmarried women in his office to look for husbands.

A motion/resolution by Lord Tu‘ilakepa to try to put the position of the Prime Minister's Personal Assistant under the civil service, was rejected by the Tongan Parliament yesterday, 8 September. The concern was that the civil service has a recruitment procedure whereas the PM's son was appointed privately to the position. From the House by Pesi Fonua.

Trimming expenditures of Cabinet and high ranking officials will be part of refashioning the Tongan civil service to become effective, Tonga's new Prime Minister Hon ‘Akilisi Pohiva, said in his inaugural address to civil servants this afternoon at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall.
