The sentences for rape in
The sentences for rape in Tonga, already rife with both reported and unreported cases for such a small population, are not nearly enough to punish and dissuade offenders when their victims are left suffering for the rest of their lives. Think of the measly 6 years a father recently got for incest.
For the Court of Appeal to reduce the sentence b/c they are 'going by the book' is terribly unfortunate because it gives rapists the message that consequences 'won't be so bad'. I feel for the victim and her family who have to endure another injustice, another blow on top of what they have gone through. Women's advocacy groups are fighting for tougher sentencing and we get this? Each time the rape victims pay for their offenders' crimes, it's time to change this around!
