It is nearly one year since November 2003 when Tongans lost their right to Freedom of Speech as a defence. After last year's Constitutional amendment, Tonga went back 128 years to the days when people were allowed to speak or to express an opinion only if it was in line with that of their superiors or chiefs. I would like to share with your readers about the consequences of a lack of mental health services in Tonga, and lack of awareness of mental health issues by Tongan people. - Rachel Williams

I had recently planned a trip to Niuatoputapu, but had to cancel when Tongan Airlines went bankrupt. Since that time there has been totally confusion and lack of transportation to the Niuas. Now they say the DC3's cannot use the runways. - Dick Watt

Further to the Parliamentary discussions held over the past few days with regard to diapers and other hazardous waste we would like to point out to the people of Tonga what we as a commercial sector business are doing. -v Roger and Lee Miller

I too have been an avid reader of comments regarding the two airlines in Tonga. Before, I lay down my comments in regards to this issue, I would like to state that my company works closely with Peau Vava'’u by means of facilitating bookings that originate from overseas. I wanted that to be clear so people who read the following comments understand the source and whilst I will write as accurately as possible, people need to be able to make up their minds on the validity of my comments. - Tele Faletau

Without a unified approach Tonga will remain behind the rest of the Pacific Region which is currently enjoying a huge boom in tourism dollars and economic forcasts thanks to the worries of Terrorism and global economic down turn across the world, tourists are now looking for a safer and more affordable holiday destination. - Andrew Fifita

I don't know if you have some kind of a forum about the grounding of Air Niu, but we only can comment for our guests on Fafa Island Resort who have been using both airlines, and the Fly Niu was the preferred airlines with most guests. -Josef Sanladerer

I would be most grateful if you could try to get Peau Vava'u views in some of your articles - it may help to balance things up a little. I am seeking your kind cooperation and help with this matter.- Soane Ramanlal

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration Division has confiscated the passports of some Tongans who are allowed dual citizenship by second countries. An exception is for people born overseas to Tongan fathers and they may hold dual citizenship because this category is currently not covered under the current legislation. In response to requests from Matangi Tonga Online readers who are concerned with this issue, the following is a copy of the current Nationality Act. - Government of Tonga

What are the disadvantages to the Kingdom of Tonga for permitting Dual Citizenship? I live overseas but am still proud to be Tongan. I was born a Tongan and will die a Tongan. I will continue to visit Tonga - my mother land. Now listen to me, I'm a Tongan, Tongan, Tonga 4ever. - Curious Citizen.

As a prospective visitor from the United Kingdom intending to stay in your Kingdom during January 05 I had hoped that after the demise of Royal Tongan Airlines the authorities would have learnt some basic lessons. - David Chapman

I wasn't aware that we Tongan who have acquired citizenship overseas, were not allowed to renew our Tongan Passport when it expires. This was a shock to me last month when I arrived at the immigration office, Nuku'’alofa. I am asking you to generate a bit of discussion about this issue as I personally believe that we are being hard-done by. - Poli Tuaileva

In light of the Government’’s success in adding "the cultural traditions of the Kingdom,"as a new conditionality on the freedom of speech and expression in Tonga, one can be forgiven for jumping to the conclusion that perhaps the Government wants the media and the Tongan people in general to revert to pre-Constitution Tongan standards in which back-chatting the chiefs was punishable by a serious flogging if not death. I saw a story in the May 31 edition of the Tacoma News Tribune. The story was headlined "Violent death, no justice for Peace Corps volunteer". The story written by TNT reporter Les Blumenthal revisits the stabbing death of Peace Corps Volunteer Deborah Gardner in 1976 in Tonga. The case has resurfaced in a book "American Taboo,'' written by Philip Weiss. - Mike Lane

I read an article in the Matangi Tonga Online of 27 May 2004, and was overwhelmed and proud to be Tongan but also because my mother's family comes from Hihifo-Pangai, Haapai when I read about the heroic efforts of the people of Pangai, going to the rescue the 450 passengers stranded at Hakauloa Reef on the ferry MV Pulupaki in the early hours of 26 May 2004. -Andrew Fifita J.P.

After reading the many comments and stories surrounding the collapse and closure of the Royal Tongan Airlines on 22 April 2004, I was both disappointed and saddened for both the loses in tourism and job opportunities the Kingdom vitally needs to stay afloat. - Andrew Fifita
