An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 was felt throughout Tonga yesterday afternoon, but no damage was reported, while people in Ha'apai who were closest to the epicentre said that shaking had become almost a daily routine since a damaging 7.9 quake on May 4 closed their hospital.

A Strong aftershock was felt in Nuku'alofa yesterday evening rattling the nerves of residents - but this time for only a few seconds. Since the violent 7.9 earthquake at 4.26 am on May 4, 2006, some 20 aftershocks have been recorded by the US Geological Survey in Tonga. The aftershocks ranging from magnitude 4.4 to 6 are located in the vicinity of the major seismic event on May 4 with an epicentre in Ha'apai.

Tons of rubble fill the main entrance to the Free Church of Tonga at Veitongo, while the walls of the 60-year-old village church are cracked beyond repair, but this did not deter the congregation who gathered for their regular 5 a.m. service today.

Injured Korean businessman, Song Sanghoom 42, considered himself lucky to be still alive today, after jumping from the second floor of the Pacific Royale Hotel, in Nuku'alofa early this morning as a Magnitude 7.9 earthquake rocked the Pacific islands from an epicentre close to Tonga.

A major undersea earthquake occurred close to Tonga and Fiji, at at 11:13:40 am Tonga time (10:13:40 am Fiji time) this morning January 3. The quake shook buildings in central Nuku'alofa for a few seconds, but so far no damage has been reported, and none was immediately obvious.
