Pacific Island countries, including Tonga, are being offered 12 fully-funded scholarships under an Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP) that opened mid-September. Hosted by the University of the South Pacific (USP), this first set of scholarships will focus on tackling marine pollution.

Eleven students who have been awarded the Chinese Government's scholarships in the past three-years attended a reception, on 3 September. The students were not able to travel to China, due to the COVID-19 situation, however, the Embassy will cover their travel expenses, now that the borders have re-opened.

A Safer Schools Program aims to reduce risks by strengthening school infrastructure against the impacts of natural disasters. The World Bank's emergency finance package to support Tonga’s post-disaster recovery and reconstruction needs will include building more disaster resilient schools.

First term school fees for 3849 secondary school students throughout Tonga are being paid under the World Bank's SET Project. A total of $962,250 pa'anga was disbursed from the World Bank's SET Project on 23 May, to pay the Term 1 fees for eligible secondary students of disadvantaged families.

At least 69% of students have passed the 2021 Tonga National Form Seven Certificate (TNFSC), confirmed the Ministry of Education & Training on January 6. Out of 13 schools, only two, ‘Eua High School and Niuatoputapu High School, achieved an overall pass rate of 100%.
