We also know that tobacco companies have consistently lied about how much damage their products cause. The WHO Protocol to Eliminate the Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products aims to prevent illicit trade, such as smuggling. While 33 countries and the European Union have signed the protocol, it needs the support of seven more governments before it can enter into force.

‘Akilisi Pohiva (76) has been elected by members of parliament as Tonga’s Prime Minister, declared at about 6:30pm, at Parliament House. He narrowly defeated his challenger, former Deputy PM, Siaosi Sovaleni by 14 to 12 votes. The result arrives four months after King Tupou VI dissolved parliament on August 24.

Tonga Police report that 2017 was a busy year with numerous operations throughout Tonga, including controlling the chaotic Rugby World Cup celebrations. Most of the crimes were committed in Nuku’alofa, which accounted for 70% of total overall reported crime in the country.

Five road deaths recorded this year is the lowest number of fatalities in over a decade. Between January and November this year, Tonga Police recorded 262 car crashes with five road fatalities - a significant drop from 18 road deaths recorded last year. Car crashes are most commonly attributed to drivers losing control, speeding, drink driving, and failing to give way or stop, police stated in urging drivers to make smart decisions on the road this summer.
