Over US$100M in micro loans has been handed out to tens of thousands of low-Income women across the Pacific Islands, including Tonga, by the South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) since its launch in 2000. Last Friday, 8 December, it gave out its US$100 millionth loan to entrepreneur Vilisi Tabua, a fish dealer at the Suva Public Market in Fiji.

Legal action against Tonga for withdrawing from hosting the 2019 Pacific Games has been given full support by members of the Pacific Games Council (PGC) General Assembly at a meeting held last Sunday 10 December, in Port Vila, Vanuatu. The PGC has instructed its legal counsel in Tonga to proceed with an action for damages, which may amount to millions.

The dissolution of the Tongan Parliament on 24 August carried a hope that new members of parliament and a new Prime Minister with a new government might be elected to advance the Tongan democratic reform that was introduced in 2010. But that hope faded with the results of the November 16 snap General Election, when voters re-elected 21 of the 26 members of the dissolved parliament.
