Tonga’s aim to reach 50% of renewable energy by 2020 is on track said Tonga Power Ltd CEO, Seti Chen. “The goal of renewable energy is to reduce our reliance on fossil fuel (diesel),” he told Matangi Tonga, while they have seen growth in demand for power increasing more than they thought it would. He said one of the biggest misconceptions is people thinking their electricity bills will be reduced by 50% once the project is completed. “It’s not 50% off the tariff that will be reduced, it’s actually 50% off the diesel that we are displacing,” said Seti. Queen Nanasipau'u officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony today for the construction of a new 2 MW solar farm at Matatoa, Tofoa – the largest to be built in Tonga. The privately-funded $10 million pa'anga development by Zhuhai Singyes Green Building Technology Ltd. from Guangdong, China, is expected to be completed by June 2017. The company's investment in Tonga solar power generation is based on a long-term agreement to sell all the power they generate to Tonga Power Ltd.

A multi-million dollar project to restore Ha’apai’s electricity network, after it was wrecked by Tropical Cyclone Ian in early 2014, was completed recently. Tonga Power Ltd reported that Cyclone Ian left 971 customers without electricity, and damaged 90% of the network lines, 65% of transformers, and a generator. The rebuilding project provided equal opportunity for women and men in the workforce.
