A special event today marks the official opening of Tonga’s first ever large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) by the Prime Minister Hon. Hu'akavameiliku. The two Battery Energy Storage systems are deliverables of the Tonga Renewable Energy Project (TREP) located at the Popua Power Station and at Matatoa, Tofoa. The project, worth a total of $16.7 million USD, is jointly funded by the Asian Development Bank, Green Climate Fund, and the Government of Australia, and implemented by Tonga Power Limited with assistance from the Government of Tonga.

The Competent Authority has approved a decrease in the regulated price of diesel effective 19 September 2022. This has contributed to a decrease of 13.73 seniti per litre from last regulated price of diesel in July 2022.

Tonga Power Ltd. is grateful for the emergency aid assets to support recovery of Tonga's distribution network, which were handed over by the Australian Government this week. This is in response to the requests for assistance after the electricity grid in the coastal areas of Tongatapu was heavily affected by the tsunami in January, during the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano.

Tonga’s ambitious goal to achieve 50% renewable energy this year has been moved to 2021, confirmed Tonga Power Ltd (TPL) at a stakeholder seminar on 28 February. However, TPL is also exploring a more aggressive plan to try and achieve the target by the end of this year.

Tonga's electricity consumers have been spared the recent electricity price increase as the government is stepping in to cover the increased charges over the next few months. A statement today said the Prime Minister “is also the Minister of Public Enterprises, the Minister of Finance and CEO of the Ministry of Public Enterprises.” has directed an independent audit of the tariff structure.

At least 80% of the electricity network was severely damaged from Nuku’alofa CBD up to Lavengamelie, to Tofoa and back to Patangata and Popua, said Seti Chen, Manager Operations at Tonga Power Ltd. today as damage assessment after Severe Tropical Cyclone Gita continued. He estimates power should be fully restored within five weeks once extra help arrives.
