Pita Taufatofua (37) was defeated by World Champion, Vladislav Larin (25) in his first Olympic match yesterday in the 80+kg division, going down 24 - 3, in Tokyo last night. “Today wasn’t my day team. Blocked some solid kicks with my face, still standing, still pushing forward...with a smile,” he said.

UPDATED. A turning kick to the head, by a European taekwondo champion has put Tonga’s Malia Paseka out by TKO in the first round of her -67kg bout at the Makuhari Messe Hall in Tokyo this afternoon. “Don't worry, she's really good 100%,” the coach said after her medical tests. Malia has another match coming up tonight (11:30pm Tonga time) in the repêchage for the bronze medal competition.

Tonga’s world famous Olympic flag bearer, Pita Taufatofua, who joins Team Tonga, competing in Taekwondo in Tokyo 2020, is hoping for an Olympic miracle. He is aiming for another spot in sprint kayaking at the games, that would make him the first person to compete at three consecutive Olympics in three different sports.

Pita Taufatofua, Tonga’s first Olympic Taekwondo athlete, will aim for gold at the Rio Olympics competing in the Men’s +80kg division on Saturday 20 August. A lifetime of pain and struggle was worth every moment to reach the Olympics, says Pita when reflecting on his journey to becoming an Olympian. It cost him six broken bones, three torn ligaments, three months in a wheelchair, a year and a half on crutches and hundreds of hours of physiotherapy, and he has no regrets.
