A stepfather was sentenced to 12 and a half years imprisonment for numerous offences that included serious indecent assault of his two young stepdaughters and raping one of them. The mother (42) who helped him commit some of these serious sexual offences was sentenced to seven years and three months imprisonment. The judge agreed that the offendings constituted a grave breach of trust and the sentence imposed should reflect it.

Police in California are urging anyone who may have been victimized by a 62-year-old man Latu Kamisese Lavaki (originally from Tonga) to contact law enforcement. The San Mateo County Sherriff’s Office, in the US, released a media statement on Wednesday, calling Lavaki a “prolific sexual predator”.

A woman is entitled to feel safe in her own home. Home invasion accompanied by sexual offending is not uncommon in Tonga possibly as a consequence of the limited security many homes have, a Supreme Court judge said when sentencing Paneti Sa (18) to five-years imprisonment for the predatory and callous crime when he raped a 27-year-old pregnant woman in her own home in Tongatapu, last year.

Samuela Holani (22) was sentenced to four-years and nine months imprisonment for the rape of a woman at home in Nuku'alofa, in July last year. "A woman is entitled to expect she is safe in her house from predatory sexual offending,” said the judge in passing sentence.
