King Tupou VI has consented to relocate people from his estates who were affected by the volcanic eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai and tsunamis. Among the worst hit areas in the catastrophe on Jan. 15, were the royal estates of Kanokupolu (Tongatapu) and Mango Island, (Ha’apai).

Havea Folau will have his name registered in a town allotment at Vaini village in Tongatapu, ordered the Lord Chief Justice who found that the Minister of Lands had no power in this circumstance to cancel the grant or make a grant of this same piece of land and register it in the name of another person, in a ruling on 18 April in the Land Court of Tonga in Nuku'alofa.

As we remember Emancipation Day with a public holiday, today 4 June 2013, we marvel the foresight of Tonga's King Siaosi Tupou I who initiated the Emancipation Edict, 150 years ago on 4 June 1862. So where has that freedom of 150 years ago left Tongans today?
