Tonga’s tense and conflicting politics were exposed when three petitions were presented to the HM King Tupou VI on 18 February, with a call to not only dissolve parliament, but also to establish a Royal Commission to investigate alleged wrong doings by government; and to appoint a caretaker government. Last week the Prime Minister, Hon. ‘Akilisi Pohiva, responded by calling the petitions “trouble making”.

The University of the South Pacific-Tonga campus welcomed HM King Tupou VI for the commissioning of their new Kukū Kaunaka Collection of academic theses by Tongan scholars, in a closed event on November 14. In a statement, USP said: “It was indeed a most humbling and significant event as Tonga USP staff marked the 50th anniversary of the USP service in the region and in Tonga.”

Tonga is interested in upgrading its diplomatic presence in the Arabian Peninsula by establishing an embassy at Dubai, the United Arab Emirate, HE Saleh Ahmed Alsuwaidi the UAE ambassador to Tonga told a Press Conference at the Tanoa Hotel, Nuku’alofa on Thursday, 15 November.

Megan dazzled in a perfect white, sleeveless gown and Prince Harry in a black tuxedo wore his miniature medals.

In his speech addressing the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the King also warned that climate change continues to pose significant security threats to island states.
