Tropical Cyclone Gita inflicted $356 million pa'anga worth of damage on Tongatapu and ‘Eua on 12 February this year, said Balwyn Fa’otusia, the CEO for the Ministry of Finance and National Planning. The damage assessment is equivalent to 38% of Tonga's GDP.

After a rush by the Tonga Government to hold a parliament session yesterday 5 March in order to address the urgent needs of the country, it was decided that Parliament will have a two-day break as the Kingdom receives New Zealand’s Prime Minister Hon. Jacinda Ardern who arrives tonight for a one-day visit. Parliament will resume on Thursday 8 March.

The Chairman of the combined utility board, Mr Carl Sanft presented a cheque of $7,319,219 to the Minister of Public Enterprises, Hon. Poasi Tei as the utilities combined dividend and tax for the 2016/2017 financial year. This is a record dividend and tax and the highest to be paid to the shareholder, the Government of Tonga by a Public Enterprise.

Tonga’s Chief Justice has quashed a decision by the Minister of Public Enterprises, Hon. Poasi Tei, to end the terms of two directors of the Tonga Broadcasting Commission who had refused to resign from the board voluntarily. The Supreme Court’s ruling also exposed a failure of the government in “a duty of candour” to disclose all relevant facts and the content of its decision making process.
